About Our Distributors
An ignition distributor is a key component in traditional ignition systems, responsible for routing high-voltage electricity from the ignition coil to each spark plug in the correct firing order. This ensures proper combustion and smooth engine operation.
Upgrading to a performance distributor can improve ignition timing accuracy, spark strength, and overall engine reliability. This can result in better throttle response, smoother idle, and improved performance in both street and performance applications.
HEI (High Energy Ignition) distributors are a popular upgrade for many older vehicles, combining the ignition coil and distributor into a single unit for simplified wiring and strong spark output. These systems are known for their reliability and ease of installation, making them ideal for restorations and performance builds alike.
For performance engines, upgraded distributors with high-output modules and precision components help maintain consistent spark delivery under demanding conditions. Whether you're running a carbureted setup or upgrading your ignition system, choosing the right distributor is essential for maximizing engine efficiency and reliability.
Whether you're restoring a classic muscle car or building a high-performance engine, selecting the right distributor ensures proper ignition timing, improved combustion, and dependable performance. Explore distributors by vehicle platform to find the best option for your application.

Distributor FAQs
What is a distributor and why do I need one?
A distributor is part of your ignition system. It routes high-voltage electricity from your ignition coil to the correct spark plug in the right order and timing.
Without a quality distributor, you risk misfires, poor performance, and unreliable operation.
How do I choose the right distributor for my Chevrolet engine?
Match your engine’s type (small-block, big-block, V6, etc.), rotation direction, and drive style (vacuum advance, mechanical advance, magnetic or optical pickup).
We label each distributor clearly by engine family and features so you can pick the correct one easily.
Can I use a Chevy distributor in a different make or engine platform?
Possibly — if the mechanical drive and shaft dimensions match, and timing/rotation is compatible. But it's safest to use a distributor designed specifically for your engine.
We recommend sticking within matched engine families unless your builder or shop confirms fit.
What’s the difference between “Ready-to-Run” and “Pro Billet / Performance” distributors?
Ready-to-Run: Typically includes all you need out of the box (housing, cap, rotor, ignition module). Ideal for most street builds.
Pro Billet / Performance: Upgraded internals, support for higher RPM, better materials, and possibly adjustability or modular parts for racing use.
Do these distributors support electronic ignitions?
Yes. Many of our distributors are built for modern ignition setups, with magnetic or optical pickups that interface with electronic control units (ECUs) or aftermarket ignition modules.
Will switching distributors affect my engine’s timing or spark advance curve?
It can, if the new distributor has a different mechanical advance curve or vacuum advance.
Make sure the advance curve matches your cam and intended use (street, strip, race). If needed, you may have to re-tune timing after installing.
Are these distributors compatible with my stock wiring and coil?
In most cases, yes. But when going higher performance, ensure your coil’s dwell and voltage ratings match the distributor and ignition system.
If you’re upgrading to high-output coils or higher RPM, we suggest consulting your ignition system’s specifications.
How do I install and set up my distributor properly?
Align the rotor correctly at TDC / cylinder #1 (per your engine spec).
Use proper torque specs on the distributor hold-down bolt.
Adjust initial timing after installation and confirm it’s stable across RPM.
For vacuum advance units, connect the vacuum source only after routing the distributor correctly.
Do TSP distributors come with warranty coverage?
Yes — all TSP distributors and components are covered by a 1-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects. You can find full details on our Warranty & Returns page.
