Charging Systems Q&A

What does a vehicle’s charging system do?

The charging system keeps your battery charged and supplies power to all of your vehicle’s electrical components while the engine is running. It includes the alternator, voltage regulator, battery, and wiring, all working together to maintain consistent electrical output.

How do I choose the right alternator for my build?

Select your alternator based on your vehicle make, engine type, and total electrical demand. Consider the number of accessories and electrical components (fans, pumps, lighting, EFI, etc.) you’re running. Higher amperage units are recommended for vehicles with multiple electronic systems.

What’s the difference between a one-wire and a three-wire alternator?

  • One-wire alternators are simple to install — they self-excite and begin charging once engine RPMs reach a certain level.
  • Three-wire alternators use a sense wire for more accurate voltage regulation and maintain better charging performance at low RPM.

Both styles are available in TSP’s lineup, depending on your setup and wiring preference.

What causes low voltage or charging problems?

Common causes include loose or corroded connections, a worn belt, faulty regulator, or a failing alternator. Always check the battery first — a weak battery can cause false charging issues.

How do I test if my alternator is charging correctly?

Use a digital multimeter across the battery terminals with the engine running. You should read 13.5–14.5 volts. If voltage drops below 13 volts or fluctuates significantly, inspect the alternator, belt tension, and wiring.

How do I maintain my alternator?

Keep the unit clean and free of oil or debris, ensure belts are tight, and check electrical connections periodically. Avoid pressure washing directly onto the alternator housing.

Do TSP charging systems come with a warranty?

Yes — all TSP alternators and charging components include a 1-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects. For more details, visit our Warranty & Returns page.
