Water Pumps Q&A
What is the difference between mechanical and electric water pumps?
A mechanical water pump is driven by the engine (belt or gear) and is common in most street and performance engines. An electric pump is powered by the vehicle’s electrical system and can offer more flexibility (decoupling from engine rpm, better control for racing/overdrive setups).
How do I choose the right water pump for my engine?
Match by make, engine family, rotation direction (standard or reverse), style (short/long housing), and impeller design. Use the filters (e.g. Vehicle Make, Color/Finish, Electric vs Mechanical) to narrow your options.
Will a high-flow water pump help engine cooling?
Yes, in many cases. A high-flow water pump increases the volume of coolant circulated, improving heat dissipation. However, it's only effective if the rest of your cooling system (radiator, hoses, thermostat) can handle it. You don’t want too much flow on low-speed because of flow losses.
Can I use a water pump from a different model or make?
As long as the mounting, housing dimensions, inlet/outlet, and rotation match your application, cross-makes sometimes work. But for reliability and proper fit, it’s best to use a pump specifically designed for your engine.
What is reverse rotation and when is it needed?
Reverse rotation pumps spin in the opposite direction of standard pumps. They are needed in setups where the drive pulley arrangement forces the pump to run backwards (for example, in some custom front-drive or accessory setups).
What materials are your water pumps made from?
TSP water pumps are typically made from cast or billet aluminum for strength, corrosion resistance, and lower weight. The components are precision-machined for long-term durability.
Do your water pumps come with gaskets or seals?
Some of our water pump listings include the required gaskets or O-rings; others may require you to purchase them separately. Always check the product description to confirm what’s included.
What should I know about installation?
- Ensure your engine is cool before removing the old pump.
- Use proper thread sealant on bolts as recommended.
- Torque bolts to the manufacturer’s spec.
- Prime the pump and bleed the cooling system to avoid air pockets.
How do I know which housing style (short, long, reverse) to pick?
Choose based on your engine’s water jacket depth and front-end accessory layout.
- Short housing: for engines with minimal front-end depth.
- Long housing: when the housing must reach deeper coolant passages.
- Reverse: when your pulley system forces reverse rotation (see Q5 above).
